The Marble Falls High School girls basketball team lost to Brownwood 57-29 Dec. 31.

The Lady Mustangs now turn their attention to Burnet in the District 24-4A opener at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3, at Max Copeland Gym.

The Lady Lions, who led 17-4 after the first period, took advantage of offensive opportunities when they came.

“We fouled too much,” Marble Falls head coach Adley Canales said. “They got to the line 30 times. We got there nine.”

Junior center Leslie Reynoso led the Lady Mustangs with 12 points.

“Our post play was good,” the coach said.

Canales wanted to face Brownwood because he believed it was a great way to get his players refocused on starting district play after enjoying the Christmas holiday.

“It’s our first game after a break,” he said. “They’re always a good team, they’re well coached.”

The Lady Dawgs (9-13) have won the last three matchups against Marble Falls in the Max. Doug Messer, who was the head coach of the program from 2013-16, is back to a familiar role – the program’s head coach.

More than a decade ago, he served as an assistant coach on former head coach Mike Cavender’s staff.

At the end of the 2011-12 season, Messer was the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches’ Class 3A Assistant Coach of the Year while Cavender was the Class 3A Coach of the Year.

Messer’s return to the front of the Lady Dawgs’ bench this season mirrors Canales’ journey. Both were assistant coaches a year ago for their respective programs and were named the head coach after the two men who hired them resigned to take jobs elsewhere.

John Berkman moved his belongings from the Marble Falls girls coaches office to the boys when he was named the Mustangs head coach April 24.

Rick Gates resigned as the Burnet girls coordinator and head coach to take a lateral position at Burkburnett High School.

Canales believes this matchup will be another Burnet County classic.

“It’ll be a good one,” he said. “There’s a lot of familiarity. It’ll be fun. The next game is the most important. We’re looking to prepare for that game and not look too far ahead.”
